TASHA NAPOAKESIK

STUDENT

NATION: Shamattawa First Nation

SCHOOLS: West Lynn Heights

TOWN: Lynn Lake, Manitoba

At 17, Tasha is already a leader in her community, demonstrated through the way she builds relationships, cares for others, and stays connected to where she comes from. As a high school student living in Lynn Lake, a northern community in Manitoba, Tasha is active in sports and values being part of her community. She describes Lynn Lake as a place where “the whole entire community feels like home because we all know each other,” and shares that even after moving away and returning, “we were all still really close to each other, like I never even left.”

Tasha speaks clearly about the importance of kindness and connection in her community. When asked what she wishes others knew, she shared “how friendly the people are, how friendly this community is, especially the teachers at this school. They’re all super kind and helpful. And the students. We’re also really friendly with newcomers.”

Beyond school, Tasha takes on meaningful responsibility through her work where she supports foster children in her community. She speaks about this role with both warmth and pride. “I love those foster kids that I take care of… we always play games together because they like having fun.”

“Tasha has been a strong participant in Spirit North programs for the last three years: one of the first to jump up and try a new game, play hard, have fun, and encourage others in her class to participate. She is motivated, kind, and encouraging to all who need it. She has worked very hard to graduate this year, and I am sure she will continue to grow as a strong leader in her community after graduation.”
— Camryn Lloyd Community Program Leader

Tasha stays active playing sports such as volleyball, badminton, and archery, and enjoys spending time with friends skating at the arena or going for long walks in town. When asked what she would choose if she could have any job for a day, Tasha spoke about her interest in drama and acting, noting that she would like to become an actress.

Reflecting on her time at Spirit North programs, Tasha shared that the program leaders bring fun and excitement into her school. She said students often look ahead on the calendar and say, “Hey, Spirit North is coming this week!” and get excited. Her favourite memories included playing games like soccer baseball and spending time laughing with friends and leaders.

Looking ahead, Tasha approaches the future with thoughtfulness and self-awareness. “I kind of want to take my time with my future because I’m still young,” she says, recognizing the importance of giving herself space to explore what she loves. Her goals center on independence, continued work, and finding a meaningful path forward.
